Vermont Plane Crash Strands Passengers on Remote Mountain
A small plane crashed into the peak of a remote mountain in southern Vermont on Wednesday morning, leaving three passengers stranded, authorities confirmed. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Piper PA-28 went down around 3:50 a.m. near the 3,000-foot summit of Equinox Mountain, located just west of Manchester.
Jamie Greene, the first assistant chief at the Manchester Fire Department, explained that the snow helped cushion the crash but also created "extremely difficult conditions" for rescue teams, who had to wade through snow as deep as four feet.
The pilot first contacted 911 at 8:33 a.m. to report the crash, stating that all three passengers had non-life-threatening injuries. The reason for the several-hour delay in reporting the crash remains unclear.
Local authorities requested assistance from the New York State Police, and by 10:16 a.m., first responders located the wreckage. A helicopter from the New York State Police flew to the scene to airlift all three passengers to safety.
One of the passengers was then transported to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation.
